Tympanometry
The only test available for assessing middle ear function is tympanometry.
Discovering middle ear issues
Normal age-related hearing loss occurs in the inner ear due to wear and tear. Ear wax blockages happen in the outer ear.
Sometimes patients come for ear wax removal, but an examination shows no blockage. Instead, they might have a middle ear issue, which can interfere with sound transmission from the outer to inner ear.
Middle ear problems can cause:
- Muffled or fluctuating hearing
- Ear pain
- Fullness in the ear (pressure)
- Tinnitus (ringing)
- Dizziness
- Popping or clicking noises
- Symptoms that change with yawning or jaw movement
Tympanometry - Glue Ear & Pediatric Assessment
Tympanometry is the gold-standard diagnostic tool for identifying Glue Ear (Otitis Media with Effusion) in children. If your child seems to be struggling with their hearing, following a cold, or experiencing speech delays, it is often due to fluid build-up behind the eardrum. Our quick, non-invasive test measures middle-ear pressure to provide immediate answers for parents and clear guidance for further ENT care if required.
While frequently used to diagnose Glue Ear in children, Tympanometry is an essential diagnostic tool for adults experiencing ‘clogged’ ears, pressure, or muffled hearing.
Often, symptoms that feel like earwax are actually caused by Eustachian Tube Dysfunction or fluid behind the eardrum. By measuring middle-ear pressure and eardrum mobility, we can determine if your hearing loss is ‘conductive’ (a physical blockage) or ‘sensory.’ This allows us to provide an accurate diagnosis and ensure you are referred to the correct ENT specialist if medical intervention is needed.
